Asianfoodfest is an up-and-coming event exploring Asian cuisines and cultures in the greater Cincinnati area. Many aspiring cooks come together to showcase their favorite dishes and what they love eating at home. There will be tickling tastes of Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Phillipeno and more. The two-day medley begins August 20, 4pm-12am and August 21, 2pm-9pm at Kolping center. The festival will also have fascinating shows such as the Lion dance, Bing Yang Performing arts dancers, Magic Dylan, Sakura Ladies Choir and more. There will also be games for all ages such as Bau Cua Ca Cop (Asian Dices), Duck in the pond, black jack etc. Bring family and friends! Its one festival unique to check out!

From Fountain Square to Lunar Lounge, Asian Americans will be rocking the stage at 2 of the hottest places to be in Cincinnati on a Friday night!  First, during the MidPoint Indie Series, Starfox, comprised of Alex Vu, Dakota Carlyle, Alex Balboa, Andrew Rice, and Teddy Murphy, will be playing with Eat Sugar and The Pass!  Alex Vu is Vietnamese, and Alex Balboa is Filipino.  Viet Nguyen will be making a guest appearance with Starfox as well.  Starfox is an up and coming band in the Indie circuit.  And according to their Facebook page, “Our newest tracks that have not yet been released will be available at our free show at Fountain Square.”

Next, DJ Mia (America’s Best Dance Crew DJ) will be at Lunar Lounge!  DJ Mia is a Filipina who has a long extensive resume from being on MTV, modeling for commercials, and touring the world DJing at the hottest nightclubs!  Check out the facebook event for more details!

So, earlier this year, I wrote a post about  Senate Restaurant in OTR, which features various creative hot dogs, which has been a recent trend in the last few years.  Today, I arrive at work, and I receive an email about Home Run Hot Dog Chips in the kitchen.   So, I guess Shearer’s decided to flip the script by offering hot dog flavored stuff.  I’ve never seen these chips before, so it seemed new to me.   (Either that, or I’ve been living in a cave and never noticed them)

It actually really tasted like a ball park hot dog.  The first flavor that I noticed was yellow mustard, which was quickly followed by a quick relish sweetness.  I was left with the beef hot dog after taste.  Yes, great way to start off the day…Hot Dog chips for breakfast before a client meeting.  Good thing I have coffee to cover up the hot dog breathe.  Maybe I should make a hot dog broth soup for dinner.

Side note:  For creative new hot dogs, follow  Senate Restaurant’s facebook page.  They update it regularly with new hot dog creations, like the “the Mike Ditka” all beef dog fried in duck fat, topped with bacon, cheddar & done up Chicago style, or “the John Belushi” all beef dog topped with pesto ailoi, Danish blue cheese, roasted red peppers & crispy shallots.”

For being in Cincinnati! Like the website states, this young yellow and green joint located on 2826 Short Vine St. brings “the island to the city.” At least,  the taste to it.

As I walked in, colors of green, yellow and black stripes on the floor popped out, the foreign art on the wall and the bright menu caught my eye.  There was reggae music playing in the background.

My eyes shifted towards the two large gallant men who wore green and yellow uniforms behind the counter. Talk about tall, dark and handsome,  they looked like football players waiting for a touchdown. One gave us a big smile and greeted us kindly.

“Welcome, and what would joo like?”

“Well, what do you recommend?”  Bao asked.

“Jerk chicken! It’s very popular here” he responded. “Would joo like to sample ‘em? Anything you like, we let you sample ‘em”

He opened up the silver tops at the counter to show us the variety of juicy meat drenched with curry spices and other Jamaican spices. The aroma was strong yet sweet. There was curry chicken, ox tail, jerk chicken, and others. Our tummies were groaning and rumbling. Like kids waiting for the ice cream truck, we were anxious for the man to hand us his creation. The sample was delicious!

Zwee called the oxtail for sure. I don’t blame him. The meat was so thick and juicy and the fat adds such a flavorful addition to the spices. It’s rare to be given the amount we were given for the price. The  large for $10 and we got 3 scoops of jamaican rice, veggies and meats piled onto the white to-go box.

Bao ordered the jerk chicken and got the same amount. He also ordered the Jamaican beef patties that were warm from the oven. I’ve never seen that on any menu before so it was a nice surprise. It was also  impressive that they had home-made tropical red punch in the back kitchen and indeed there was a “punch” to it.  I don’t want to ruin the surprise kick but if I must, there is a hint of ginger in there. Trust me, we got thirstier after drinking this.

Hopefully, everyone enjoys Island Fryday like we did. Like the boys of OTR, I love LOVE the authentic places that embrace the taste of their culture.
